Nobody ever got rich spending money

by Kim Lavine

Overcapitalization up-front is one of the top reasons small business fail. Here's how to avoid being one of them.

What is Overcapitalization?

My grandfather and all his brothers emigrated from Russia with a few dollars in their pockets, eventually turning themselves into self-made millionaires. They had a favorite saying that I still love to quote:

Nobody ever got rich spending money.”

They always had the most Spartan offices and warehousing. Most of the millionaires I know think the same way. I’ve personally seen great businesses fail because they borrowed too much money up front to fund expensive investments in offices and equipment.

How Much Money is Too Much Money?

You might think that borrowing as much money as possible right at the beginning when starting your business is a good thing, but it just burdens you with unnecessary debt service, which can put you out of business fast if you don’t generate the sales revenues to pay it.You should resist every temptation possible to sign expensive leases on warehouse and office space at start-up.

Forget about fancy office furniture until you can pay cash for it. Some founding Googlers are still working on the same sawhorse desks they started out with!

Every Dollar Counts

Work out of your basement or garage for as long as possible. If it’s good enough for Bill Gates, it’s good enough for you. The most successful businesses are lean and mean. Everybody I know who is saddled with expensive offices that looked good at one time, regret it in the long run.

Nobody ever got rich spending moneyIf you don't understand the difference between Fixed, Variable and COGS expenses and the impact interest rates have on them, you won't ever make money. If you want to make money, check out these Excel Spreadsheet tools to help you understand the cost of money and it's impact on your bottom line.
