Mom is the New Sexy

Because power is sexy and today’s moms are powerful, controlling $8.5 trillion in annual consumer spending—or three-quarters of the U.S. economy. But not only is “Mom the New Sexy,” moms are “The New Geeks” too, as the top early adopters of new technology, driving billions of dollars in new product and market innovation, reshaping the American economy in ways equal to the Renaissance or the Industrial Revolution.

At times of historic change comes historic opportunity. THE MOMMY MANIFESTO will show you how to get your share, before the train leaves the station!

38 million women with children control $8.5 trillion in consumer spending--three quarters of the American economy. Be afraid, be very, very afraid.

What? Are you kidding me?

Forty-five years after the first women’s revolution, women still only make up 3 percent of top CEO’s, earn only 75 percent of wages of men, and are 40 percent more likely to be living in poverty.

No wonder women are starting businesses in record numbers

Fed up with a corporate world that penalizes them for being both women and mothers, and gender inequities that are getting worse, women are beginning to take control of their financial destinies by starting their own businesses. Not only are there 11 million women entrepreneurs in this country, making up 40 percent of all businesses, but women are starting businesses today at twice the rate of men. Today’s business titans of the old economy are afraid of us and are simultaneously looking to us to show them the way to new money-making opportunities. They’re counting on us not realizing that the only thing separating us from them is our self-doubt, while they try to figure out how to keep opportunity in the hands of the few. They’re counting on women to not recognize the power they have to dramatically affect this precarious situation.

So what’s stopping us?

Is it just going to take more women to have faith? Or is it a simple matter of confidence? Do we need to turn off the internal dialog telling us we can’t do it, and believe in ourselves instead? What is the internal dialog in women’s heads anyways nowadays, and who’s programming it? Maybe we need to replace “lose weight, be pretty, lose weight, be pretty, lose weight,” with “kick butt, knock down doors, stand up for ourselves, be smart, take what’s ours.” Maybe we should figure out what we need to do to get our fair share, and program that in instead.

There are a hundred books out there telling women about all the stupid mistakes we make to mess up our lives, our marriages, our jobs, our diets, our money. At every supermarket checkout there are a hundred magazines telling us to be skinnier, prettier, richer, sexier, better dressed, with perfect homes and better cooking skills. Where are the books and magazines telling us we’re already skinny and pretty enough? Where are the books and magazines telling us how to be richer, better dressed, with better decorated homes by owning our own businesses and economic futures? Where are the books that tell us that our measure of success as mothers is not how clean and well-decorated our house is, but how happy our kids are?

Enough with telling women they’re not good enough!

This world does not need one more book or magazine or voice telling women they don’t measure up so that somebody can make a profit selling them diet pills, cleaning supplies, wrinkle cream, or even books.

It’s no wonder women find it tough to succeed when they bring all this baggage to the brink of opportunity and have to compete with men who don’t have all this self-defeating attitude pre-programmed into them. Speaking in a vernacular I’ve learned from years in the male-dominated world of business, getting to the top demands such incredible fortitude, such Heroic nerve, such balls out, balls-to-the-wall, ball-busting, brass balls confidence that even a moment’s hesitation in the race to each day’s finish line can result in failure. (Just for a minute, try to think of any analogies to boobs that symbolize strength, courage, or that you could even say aloud in a boardroom, where I’ve heard all these male images spouted.)

We’re the architects of this New Economy.

It’s time for us to take our share! Don’t call us feminists, call us boss! We’re not asking for a job. This is a new way of living, and we’re bringing our kids with us this time. Consider this a cannonball fired across your bow.

After one year as General Manager for a business in Chicago, I decided the corporate world was not for me. At heart, I was a simple, down-to-earth girl with simple have a business of my own. While taking a camping break up in the northwoods of Wisconsin, my hubby and I wandered into a book store where I found Kim's book, Mommy Millionaire. I could not put it down and read the entire book in two days! I wasn't much fun for my hubby, but he understood. She inspired me to go ahead and make my own business work. Although my website is still a work in process, I'm a lot further than where I would have been without reading Kim's book!

Dear Kim,

Thanks to your website, blogs, newsletters and daily spoon feeding of support, I am going to take my patent pending yoga product which is not commercially available anywhere yet, out of the closet and get it out into the world.
How do I list my product in your business directory?

I left my job as a teacher to stay home with my new born. As he grew and was learning to feed himself I discovered that their was not a good toddler bib that protected the child's clothes as well as the seat. So.....I designed one through trial and error. Then I bought your book and it as been WONDERFULLY INSIGHTFUL, INFORMATIVE. and SCARY in places. I entered my bib in a contest with the Dallas Market Center for The Next Big Thing and was chosen as 1 of 3 finalists. They are flying me to Dallas later this month and giving me free exhibition space to sale. A winner will be determined at the show. This is a tremendous opportunity and your book has been and continues to be a guide for me as a continue on this journey. You can read about my product at on exhibitors and new product search contest. I hope to have my website published by the end of the week. This past year I had to return to work, but I'm hoping that all will go well in Dallas and I can pursue BibBaby Company and build a line of products. little boy is 3 years old. Thank you for putting yourself out there to inspire and educate women. Sincerely.....Sabrina Russell

I wish someone had told me to buy Mommy Millionaire sooner...what a great find. I'm only on page 40, but I am already hooked. I especially love the Mommy Millionaire Mystique! It is so true...a lot of sucessful women act like, "It's not Rocket Science!"
Finally a real world woman: Kim. I'm right there with you...thanks for paving the way.

Hi Kim,

Can't wait to read your book! I already reserved a copy from the library :) I have read a lot about you online and its amazing how you inspire me! I am an immigrant from the Philippines who came here 3 years ago. Leaving a high-profile job for marriage, I found myself lonely and 'worthless'. I have filled up and sent more than two hundred applications, each with a personalized cover letter. To date, only 3 firms have responded back to me. While I now work part-time, deep in my heart, I know I can accomplish more, so with the support of my family, I am starting a business this summer :) Can't wait, it will be awesome and I hope to learn tons from your experience. Our concept is totally unique and I am really excited.
