« Warning! Danger! 'Bad Money' »

by Kim Lavine

“It’s clear we need to apply life support,” said Bad Money. “We want to get you some cash to take care of these immediate and critical needs, which will keep you growing and headed in the right direction until we put the whole deal together."

“What happened to the six figures?” I asked. I could not have known then how impossibly naïve this question was at this time.

Most Angel deals, I would later learn, take a minimum of a year to complete. I was only on my second month.

Doing Due Diligence

Due diligence alone, I would later find out, took a full eight weeks. Nobody told me this then, and I had absolutely no clue, but I thought the idea of giving me money in the short-term while we put together the long-term sounded like a good idea.

“What kind of credit do you have?” asked Bad Money, ignoring my question. “I mean, if I called your banker right now, what would she say about you?"

“She’d say, that we have two loans with her, of which we’ve never even been late on a payment once in two years. She’ll tell you that we’re about to pay off one of those loans in full, worth $75,000, when we sell our rental property in the coming month. She’ll tell you that we’ve had an account in good standing for over ten years at her bank, never once bouncing a check. She’ll tell you that, despite our business’s financial difficulties, we’ve managed to maintain an exceptionally good credit score by making all of our payments on time, and negotiating with our vendors for terms on the rest.” I told him, knowing it was all the truth.

“What’s her number?” he suddenly demanded of me very brusquely. “Her name and number—I need it now!”

Flustered by his Urgency

I opened my day planner and read off the name and number as he wrote it down. He took his piece of paper, got out his phone, and immediately left the room while dialing. Just a few minutes later, he came back into the room, all in a huff.

“I just called your banker,” he proclaimed to the group. “She told me that you’re a big credit risk and that all the things you just said to me aren’t true!”

I knew my banker had lost all interest in me, and she was many things, but she wasn’t a liar. She would not compromise her job, her career, or her professional standing to say something that was untrue about me just to scuttle my business.

“Could you please leave the room for a few minutes while we work this out between us?” Bad Money asked.

We left the room in a state of bewilderment. I didn’t like pressure being applied. I hadn’t asked to come there, they had asked me!

All of my senses started to beep: “Warning!” “Danger!”

I called my banker to ask her if she had indeed said these things. Her secretary answered; I couldn’t talk to her because she was on vacation. She wasn’t even in the office. Had somebody else said these horrible things, I asked? Her secretary assured me, “I’ve been sitting next to this phone for the last half hour, and it hasn’t rung once.”
