« Presentation Must-Haves for Angel Investors »

by Kim Lavine

I was golden. I had, despite all odds, successfully made it through a process that had sunk most of the entrepreneurs who had come before me. How was it possible that I could be on the brink of failure and the brink of success at the same time?

This was a question that would drive me crazy for 10 months

I didn’t have time anymore for petty jealousies or squabbles or school mom gossip, and I totally gave up caring about what others thought about the kind of car I drove. On a scale of one to ten, these considerations were a one, and I was now living at ten.

So this was the process one used, I determined, to get ice water running through your veins. I was going to need it.

Presentation must-haves

This is standard if you’re presenting to Angels, VC, or at any other Funding Event where organizers sponsor venues for entrepreneurs and investors to come together.

Cover – Business-positioning statement: what are you selling to whom?

  1. Market – How many billions of consumer dollars are spent on your market already?
  2. Solution – What’s your product, how does it solve a problem or fill a need, and is any of it proprietary or patented?
  3. Competitive Position – Who are your competitors—you do have some—and how are you going to protect your market from them?
  4. Marketing / Sales / Support – How many people are going to be needed to sell and support your marketing plan, and how much do they cost?
  5. Business Strategy – How do you plan to grow beyond launch, or how soon will you become profitable?
  6. Financial Projections – What is this market worth and what percentage of it can you sell to?
  7. Funding Sought – Amount, comparables, use of funds; here comes the dreaded Sources and Use spreadsheet. Just don’t ask for a dollar more than you actually need or they’ll eat you alive.
  8. Management – Nobody asked to see my resume ever, but they sure cared that I was passionate and driven, with kids to feed at home. They love enthusiasm. Lacking that, if you have a good resume, make sure you feature it.
  9. Milestones – e.g.: product launch, next funding event, when you will breakeven; again, you’d better be right! Don’t build in any “Blue Sky” scenarios, where you over-project and under-deliver.
  10. Exit Strategy – Are you going to sell in an IPO and go public, or sell to a strategic partner? These investors want to know how long it’s going to be before they see cash money return on their investment so don’t leave this out.
