« Old Money, New Money, Washington money, Symphony Money and Corporate Money »

by Kim Lavine

The panel before us of four men and one woman looked, smelled, talked and dressed like money: Old Money, New Money, Washington money, Symphony Money and Corporate Money. I eventually came to know each of these individuals personally, but then I could only marvel at how perfectly cast they were for the roles of millionaire or friend of millionaire, a.k.a. venture capitalist.

Speaker number one was Symphony Money

He was chairing the event and he was so refined in dress and speech, with such a casual elegance and artistic flair that I could only think ‘Cary Grant meets James Bond.’

He introduced Washington money

He was a venture capitalist, and he looked like he was produced from the same mold that made Ken Dolls, with perfect immovable politician hair, of senatorial quality.

His partner in the VC firm was Corporate Money

This was the same man I had introduced myself to at the bar; he was the epitome of sedate business protocol distilled from twenty years as an executive level banker at some of the biggest east coast institutions, composed, non-expressive and always-thinking.

After that was Old Money

She was the only woman on the panel. She’s still an enigma to me today, but her tight-lipped, buttoned-down, sharp-witted presence would always keep you on your very best behavior.

Though every one else spoke briefly, it was clear that New Money was the star of this show. He would later be described to me as a serial-entrepreneur who made his millions again and again, each time more novel than the last.
