« I needed VC, and I needed it now! »

by Kim Lavine

This plan was once again going to hell before my eyes. I was suddenly in a cash freefall without a parachute. My survival instincts instantly kicked in.

We were waiting to be summoned back into the room when two men came in, looking and smelling like money. They were checking in with the receptionist to let her know they were there for their three o’clock meeting with the Angels. I was really hoping they were Venture Capitalists, here to shop their pet businesses to them. I wasn’t going to wait to find out.

“Hi, I’m Kim Lavine, President of Green Daisy, maker of the Wuvit--over two million dollars in sales in the last two years at the nation’s premiere retailers, including Saks,” I said, introducing myself. “I heard you have a meeting with the Angels.”

I needed VC, and I needed it now!

“We’re meeting with them, too. Can I get your card?”

“Sure,” one of them said, stunned and impressed at the same time. I know this is an effective tactic, so use it fearlessly.

“What do you do?” I asked.

“We have a life sciences company,” one of them explained. “We specialize in nano technology. Do you know what that is? You know, very small elements of matter…”

Yes, I was a woman, I had blond hair, and I did know what nano technology was. “Oh sure,” I assured him. “So you’re here looking for funding?”

I didn’t know it then, but I was looking at cookie-cutter, high-tech, life-sciences entrepreneurs. They would become painfully obvious to me in the next months. They always showed up looking for money, ultra-casual, dressed in short sleeves, sometimes even shorts, never a tie, and always a shiny, full-of-themselves self-assurance that bordered on smugness.

They couldn’t help it, after all

Life sciences was the absolute darling of Venture Capital and Angel funding of the moment, picking up all the slack from high-tech, which had sustained critical damage from the late nineties dot.com bust. Money was falling all over itself to find the next big life sciences thing.

Compared to that, Wuvits weren’t very sexy. Still, I like to remind everybody that Wal-Mart is the biggest corporation in the world, not Microsoft, not Apple, bigger even than the big three automakers put together, and certainly bigger than any medical device or drug company that I know.

But all the smart money is in life sciences

Bad Money suddenly appeared from the conference room, shaking the hands of Life Science.

“Doesn’t anybody wear a suit anymore?” he asked them. “Where’s your tie?” He definitely wasn’t pleased with their short sleeves.Great way to make a first impression, I thought, secretly agreeing. “Go on in,” he said, directing them into our meeting room. “I’m going to finish up with these people, and I’ll be in in a few minutes.”
