« I came, I met Estate Money, I sold him.  »

My banker called and asked if I could come to his office to meet with another investor he knew. “He’s a friend of mine, and he manages the family estate. He’s also a CFO, if you find that you need another one. 2 pm, my office. Just give him the ten minute spiel; he’s already on board.”

I came, I met Estate Money, I sold him.

He not only wanted to invest, he wanted to work for me, too, and he emailed me his resume to prove it.

The CFO I had met at the original Angel presentation called me to see how I was doing; I filled him in and he said “Put an ad in the paper and see if you can shake any more investors out of the woodwork.” I did, and I got two phone calls. Turns out one of them had been watching my progress from a distance since my very first kiosk.

This was an embarrassment of riches

The time had come to put the cap on the deal. There were so many interested players by this time, I had to find out who was for real and who wasn’t. I learned to qualify potential investors by asking them to sign a complex non-disclosure agreement, before I showed them the business plan. Those who weren’t for real never would. My list of players was long: Smart Money, The Angels and all their complicated individual personalities, Mr. CFO, my banker, Chinese MBA, Estate Money, and a motley crew made up of strategic manufacturing partners and vendors, investors I picked up from the newspaper, and—last ditch—family members.

My banker had another caveat:

“Don’t ever put all your energy behind one plan. You gotta have a Plan B and Plan C if you can. It isn’t a deal till it’s a signed deal.”

I was working every possible angle

I met with my manufacturing partners, with whom I had a substantial personal guaranty loan, and asked them if they would trade it for stock. They were definitely interested.
