« How To Keep Trying to Do A Deal »

by Kim Lavine

“Let’s see if we can come to some agreement,” my banker interceded. “We’re going to have to discuss this and get back to you,” Old Money said again.

That didn’t sound good

I was crushed as I followed them out to the parking lot. I needed to get a sense of what Old Money was thinking.

“I’m sorry this came up so unexpectedly,” I said. “I wasn’t planning it. What do you think the Angels will think about this? How can I afford to give Mr. CFO an equity stake too?”

“You’d better worry about how you can afford not to. Nobody is going to give you any money unless they have somebody like him on board making sure it’s managed wisely.”

“You mean the investors won’t mind giving me money when I’m giving part of my company away?”

“Are you kidding"

"That’s the best thing you could have possibly done in there. How you got somebody of that caliber to offer to come and work for you is nothing short of amazing.

"That isn’t going to make the investors mad," she went on. "it’s going to make them happy. If they can get executive level management like that at no cost other than equity, they’ll have so much confidence and security in this venture, that they’ll give you more cash. Like I said, you’d better worry now about bringing on capable financial management.”

Obviously, Mr. CFO was in the driver’s seat

We had already been through a total of two CFO’s and one banker before him. All of them had bowed out for being too busy or too disinterested. By this time, my books were a mess. Everybody had rifled through them, imprinting them with their own incomplete work, and consequently nobody understood them anymore, including us. My CFO in San Francisco couldn’t even be reached.

We needed help

By the time I pulled into the driveway, Mr. CFO had emailed me his resume, and called. I found myself interviewing him for the job of Chief Financial Officer for Green Daisy! Me—interviewing him! He was almost as accomplished as Smart Money, who took one look at his resume and said,

“You’d be lucky to have this guy work for you. Did you look at his resume? He’s amazing!”
