« He Didn't Like Negotiating with a Woman, But I Took Him To the Mat »

by Kim Lavine

The next day I was calling his references. One of them was an international greenhouse grower based in Colorado. They told me that he was almost single-handedly responsible for leading them from the brink of bankruptcy to record profits, hedging both Euros and natural gas futures to squeeze every penny out of every dollar possible.

I think he could handle Wuvits

Mr. CFO wanted an equal equity share to that of Smart Money’s. I started to add up the equity and worry a lot about what was going to be left for cash to buy.

I asked Smart Money what to do

He advised that I negotiate with him. Mr. CFO told me how excited he was to be working with me. I started to negotiate, and by the time the phone call was over, I had him down to what Smart Money gave me as a best-case goal. The next morning there was an email waiting for me, calling a halt to Mr. CFO’s participation. He was in revolt, and he was taking the whole deal with him

The Angels agreed. This ship was sinking.

The money was within reach, and was slipping away again. I called Smart Money who made the first of what was no doubt thousands of mediating phone calls as he cautiously blended and balanced the volatile personalities and combustible financials. He put together the delicate framework of a deal, before turning it over to a lawyer, whom he hoped wouldn’t screw it up.

How could I have trusted my lawyer to do this job before?

Smart Money was about to do two years worth of work for me in the next four months. I wouldn’t have believed it unless I had seen it. This was definitely something better left to professionals. I don’t think there are many people in the U.S. capable of this task. One of them was working for me—for “free.”

Smart Money called Mr. CFO and, after some amount of massaging, managed to put him back in the deal. It turned out Mr. CFO didn’t like negotiating with a woman, especially a woman who was looking for cash, over which he held the control.

Smart Money knew just how to spin this, and Symphony Money laughingly agreed. “If she can negotiate that tough with you, just think what she can do with everybody else. It’s a good thing!”
