« 100 Entrepreneurs & 5 Investors--I Didn't Waste any Time »

by Kim Lavine

On Wednesday morning I found myself at my local University, in a room full of entrepreneurs eager to get the attention of the one venture capital group, as well as the Angel Investor group, there to give their presentation. There must have been at least a hundred of us and only five of them.

I didn’t waste any time

My SBDC counselor had already given me the names of the key contacts of each group, and had spoken to them in advance about me.

The room was a very posh meeting space complete with paneled walls, green leather chairs around huge circular tables and a bar. I went to the bar and ordered a glass of water; my hand was shaking so much as I picked it up, I had to put it back down again to keep it from spilling.

To my good fortune standing right next to me, ordering a diet cola, was one of the key members of the venture capital panel.

“Hi,” I said immediately before I lost my nerve, handing him my business card. “I’m Kim Lavine, President of Green Daisy, Inc., manufacturer of the Wuvit. We’ve done just under two million dollars in retail sales in the last two years on this great product, selling to the nation’s premiere retailers like Saks. I’d love the opportunity to meet with you to discuss our exciting future. Could I please have one of your cards so I can follow-up?”

He obviously didn’t know what hit him

I could see in his expression that he was decidedly impressed. It didn’t hurt either that I had a very attractive and feminine business suit on which displayed my secret weapon in this room of buttoned-up collars and drab suits: cleavage. He, like any man, was powerless to keep from staring as he fished his business card out of his wallet, handing it to me and inviting me to call him.

We were asked to take our seats. I found my way to a table with five other hopefuls, all ready with pens in hands and business plans packaged in slick binders for the opportunity to get some face-time with money.

The first was another freelance CFO, who wanted to network with the Angels and the VC to help package the financials of all the prospective companies that came before them with hat in hand. He ended up doing this for me.

Next was a woman from a non-profit social service agency who was looking for an alternative source of funding. She acknowledged she had a really low percentage shot at getting money from self-proclaimed capitalists.

Another woman, who’s daughter was in my son’s kindergarten class, ran a capital management company. She dressed in a very conservative suit and looked as if she could have been on the panel.

Next to her was an inventor, who told us he had at least ten patents though none of them had gone on to commercial production or success, partly because he was just interested in inventing.

Then there was a man wearing jeans and a denim shirt, who described himself as an artist with a fantastic new idea that had something to do with painting. He was an ineffective communicator, mumbling just barely audibly. Everybody gave up asking him what it was he did exactly after a garbled response.
