Search first--buy later. My rule is to never buy from squatters; it's better to make something up that nobody's heard of. Here's how:
- Log on to any of the popular domain registration sites and type in the domain name you are looking for. You’ll instantly learn if it’s available, and if it isn’t, who owns it. You may contact these owners to see if they would be interested in selling it, though this can be pricey. Better make something up yourself.
- For as little as $5 a year you can retain ownership of your domain by keeping your registration current.
- If you let your registration lapse even for a day, someone else can buy it, so opt for the long-term. Some of these services offer email accounts, website building tools, and even ecommerce.
