The Best I Ever Had

by Kim Lavine

It is impossible to be unhappy and grateful at the same time. I spent some time this summer being happy and grateful, and it was the best I ever had.

Entrepreneur, Heal Thyself

There is no courage without vulnerability. Sometimes you have to stop running to win the race. Sometimes you have get downtime to heal yourself so you can get back up and fight.

Entrepreneurs are the prize fighters in the middle of the ring, everyone's cheering for and betting on. Some are betting for you, others are betting against you. Sometimes you have to get out of the ring to win, especially when you're down for the count.

I took myself out of the ring where I waged a two year battle to connect women with capital for the summer to laugh, paddle, party, lay in the sun, and swim in the moonlight. But only after I became very ill.

It Was The Best I Ever Had

I came out stronger, sexier, more confident, more determined and happier than I've ever been. And more ready to fight for my dream.

Being a Startup Entrepreneur is Hard

We're on the front lines drawing criticism from every angle, taking huge, death-defying risks and opening ourselves up to the spectacle of public failure as we chase down dreams most people consider impossible and crazy.

Being a Startup Woman Entrepreneur is Harder

I believe women entrepreneurs are held to a higher standard by some men for behavior expectations like cockiness and brass, which are acceptable in men--and critical to being a successful entrepreneur.

I know as women we’re all about trying to make everybody happy all the time. A lot of the survival skills we’ve learned in order to make it in this world are about going along to get along, trying to fit in, downplaying the fact that we’re women while accepting what we’re given.

Don't let a fear of making someone mad stop you from being passionate, taking risks, and standing up for yourself.

The rules as they stand were meant to be broken

If you’re going to get ahead in this world you’re going to have to be willing to break the rules. If you play by the rules as they are currently written, you’re not going to get anywhere, as the facts plainly demonstrate in the world of Venture Capital.

What people think about you as you’re out there working outside of the status quo shouldn’t be a factor in what you decide to do daily to get your share of success.

I’m going to be honest with you right up front

You’re going to make a lot of people nervous by breaking the rules. Some of them are undoubtedly going to be your family and friends. Some of them are going to try and get you to stop, to conform, to fit back into the system. You’re just going to have to learn to tune them out. You don’t need those people.

Watch out world, I'm on fire.
