10 Rules for Doing Business Nobody Else Will Tell You

by Kim Lavine

1. Don’t apologize for being new

Everybody's buying what's new. Don't apologize for being a mom either. If you're paying the bills, you're the boss.

2. When dealing with someone in business, always ask yourself “what’s in it for them?”

I contructed a 'BS Machine,' which was a checklist of questions i would ask myself before getting into a new business relationship which has saved me money, time and heartache.

3. Pay your attorney for advice only

Attorneys are not your friends and they are definitely not your business partner. Learn how to keep legal advice separate from business and personal advice. You can do do most of the legal paperwork yourself, (including setting up your corporation, registering your trademarks, and even writing your own patent.)

4. Find a mentor

Having someone who’s “been there and done that” can really help you get through tough times and understand it’s part of the territory.

5. Nobody ever got rich by spending money

My grandfather used to say that and he turned himself into a self-made millionaire after immigrating to the US. It worked for him, and Warren Buffett, it will work for you.

6. Have a story

Everybody loves a good story, or what is now called a brand. Making meaningful connections with customers and consumers is what drives sales.

7. Create a pitch and cold-call!

Nothing has been more effective for me than cold-calling MAJOR accounts. Write a script and just suck it up and do it.

8. Everything happens for a reason

Accept challenge, conquer it and learn from it. Some of the worst things that ever happened to me turned out to be the best things.

9. The “$20,000 Rule”

That's how much it takes to fund even the smallest business startup. Don't kid yourself because being under-capitalized at the beginning is a sure way to fail.

10. Believe in yourself!

Never stop having faith in yourself or your vision or your product, even if other people tell you you’re crazy!
